“I fear thou dost not love me, that thou hast forsaken me, because I know I deserve not to be beloved. These thoughts are hard as hell, they give no rest to my soul.”
Read MoreCS Lewis is certainly correct that those who are willing to seek knowledge in unfavorable conditions are the ones who achieve more. Hard work, as it turns out, tends to pay off. But Lewis was a Christian and as such we may find more in this quote than just his encouragement to pursue knowledge regardless of the conditions you find yourself in.
Read MoreWith the latest update to Things 3, version 3.17 to be precise, users have been given what feels like super powers to automate a crazy amount of the ways they use Things thanks to the wonderful integrations with Shortcuts that the fine folks at Cultured Code have introduced. It was enough for me to scrap my previous system, which I explained on episode 63 of Inner Dialogue.
Read More‘Heroes’ by Ben Rector is a great song. It showcases a distinct vulnerability of longing for simpler times, when the world was small, when we were still young, and when we had all the answers….before we came into intimate knowledge of the myriad ways the world would break our hearts.
Read MoreI'm reading ‘why we are restless’ by Storey and Storey, which I highly recommend for any one interested in understanding the philosophical and cultural changes over the past few hundred years that have built the modern framework we find ourselves in today, in modern America.
Read MoreI had the privilege to co-lead an 8-week study of the book of Acts at my church recently and now that it has concluded, I thought it could be helpful to share the slide deck and speaking notes here.
Read MoreA while back (April 12, 2021!!) I was frustrated with myself and how I was spending my time, so I wrote down this set of questions:
How do I determine what is worth my time?
What is worth my time?
What is not worth my time?
What is my time budget?
How will these changes be accomplished?
Last night, June 20, 2022, I finally sat down and answered them.
Read MoreIn an effort to more consistently remind myself of the truth found in the Bible I made a Shortcut for my iPhone and iPad that will show me a randomly selected Bible verse from a set of verses that I have provided. It’s pretty cool.
Read MoreWhen I came across this verse the other day: “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” Romans 12:12, I posted it on my Instagram Story, with this subsequent thought: “circumstances change and so does our perception of them. God never changes. So our communication with him must not change based on the circumstances we find ourselves in.” And while what I wrote remains true, I’d like to expand my thoughts and get to what I think Paul is saying in this verse specifically.
Read MoreLove should abound in conjunction with knowledge and discernment. Our renewal through Jesus is a matter of both heart and mind. Through this renewal we should be able to test (Romans 12.2) what is the will of God, what is true, what is worthy of our time and affections.

Read MoreFor by grace you have been saved through faith.
Read MoreWhen we combine this resolute, unwavering, unchanging, unflinching love with the promise that it will persist and endure forever we are presented with a promise that seems too good to be true. We can think it’s too good to be true because we’re human and we know we aren’t capable of that sort of love but the funny thing about God and the Bible is that their promises always come true. It would be annoying that God is always perfect and his words are always true if he wasn’t so good and loving and merciful and gracious and forgiving and beautiful and awesome.
Read MoreThe people you hang out with are going to have an undeniable impact on who you become and what you value, so be wise about who you choose to spend your time with. It really is that simple.
Read MoreI’m the kind of person who has a lot of ideas and goals but lacks the sort of daily followthrough to see a lot them come to fruition. It’s part lack of discipline and part being easily distracted by the sexiness of a new idea; either way it’s a recipe for watching a lot of good ideas and goals float past me with the constant question of ‘what if?’ left echoing in my head, which sucks.
So this brings me to the initial question in this post, ‘What can I do every day that, over time, will result in me meeting my goals or seeing my ideas come to fruition?’
Read MoreThere are power in words. So it makes sense that confessing something with words would carry weight. In this case John tells us that if we confess that Jesus is the Son of God that God will abide in us and we in him. This is a huge concept.
Read More‘If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.” That’s like a verbal punch straight to the gut and yet, how many of us consistently worry about pleasing other people?
